The Spammers’ Vote

October 6th, 2008

Elections in United States are coming up, and spammers continue to leverage the public interest of election topics to lure users into opening spam and virus messages. Secure Computing’s TrustedSource Labs has already taken a look at the candidates’ popularity among spammers in our October Spam Report. We found that mostly due to a spam surge in early September, Senator Obama has been able to forge ahead in the spam polls with a 6-to-1 lead. The majority of that lead was built in one day, September 3rd.

After that early surge, the race between Senators McCain and Obama has become increasingly closer while still being moderately biased towards Obama who maintains a minimum ten point lead on most days.

Topical spam, including election themed spam, remains to be a major trend throughout this year. Secure Computing’s TrustedSource Labs estimates the daily amount of world-wide U.S. election-related spam to be around 100 million messages – and we will continue to make sure that your inbox won’t be abused as a ballot box.

With less than 30-days left before the election, it is likely spammers will continue to use this hot topic to push their personal agendas as well. And who will be their favorite candidate to hitch their success to? Stay tuned as we continue to monitor this for you right up to election day.
